The mid-20th-century package of semi-dwarf wheat and rice varieties, fertilizer, irrigation and pesticides that roughly tripled Asian and Latin American grain yields between the 1950s and the 1980s and pushed back famines widely predicted to be inevitable. Its costs, groundwater depletion, agrochemical dependence, lost crop diversity and widened rural inequality, are part of its honest record, and both the achievement and the bill are carried here.
