The plant breeder at the center of the Green Revolution. Working in Mexico from 1944, Borlaug bred short-strawed, disease-resistant wheats that turned fertilizer into grain instead of collapse, then carried them to India and Pakistan on the edge of famine. He received the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize, credited, in the common formulation the sources repeat with due caution, with saving as many as a billion lives.
