The Leicestershire farmer who invented modern livestock breeding as a method: breed in-and-in from the best, measure the results, and hire out proven sires rather than sell them. His New Leicester sheep and improved longhorn cattle made him famous across Europe, and his in-breeding and progeny-testing practices are the direct ancestors of every modern breed society and stud book.
