Growing plants with their roots in nutrient solution instead of soil. Built on 19th century plant nutrition chemistry descending from Liebig's work, hydroponics trades land for control: water use drops, yields climb, and the growing season never ends, which is why greenhouse vegetables and vertical farms run on it.
