The hardy browser of the world's marginal lands, domesticated from the bezoar ibex of the Zagros mountains at the same deep date as sheep. Goats convert scrub and steep ground no other livestock can use into milk, meat and hair, which has made them both the smallholder's most reliable animal and, mismanaged, an agent of overgrazing.
