The backup copy of the world's crop diversity, opened in 2008 inside a mountain on the Arctic island of Spitsbergen. Genebanks worldwide deposit duplicate seed there against war, disaster and their own failures; the first withdrawal came in 2015, when the international genebank in Aleppo, Syria, recovered its collection through Svalbard. It holds well over a million seed samples.
