The CGIAR center for farm animals in the developing world, formed in 1994 by merging the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases in Nairobi with the International Livestock Centre for Africa in Addis Ababa; its headquarters is Nairobi, Kenya. It works on livestock as a pathway out of poverty: animal health, productivity, food safety and the livelihoods of the herding and smallholder households for whom an animal is capital, income and insurance at once.
