The United Nations agency for food and agriculture, founded in 1945 with the mandate of freedom from hunger. From its Rome headquarters the FAO runs the world's agricultural statistics, sets food standards through the Codex Alimentarius, and coordinates responses to locusts, animal disease and famine. Its yearbooks are the baseline numbers nearly every claim about world farming rests on.
