A tillage implement of concave, angled steel discs turned edge-on into the soil, which breaks and mixes the surface without inverting it the way a mouldboard plough does. Silas Moody's 1866 patent and Frederick Nishwitz's 1869 revolving harrow are the earliest patented ancestors of the type, with Nishwitz generally credited as the direct forerunner of the modern disc harrow.

The earliest U.S. patent I have found for a disc harrow, or at least a machine with a series of discs side-by-side on a shaft, was patented in 1866 by Silas A. Moody of San Francisco.
