A sprinkler pipe up to half a kilometer long that walks in a circle around a well, watering as it goes, the machine behind the green circles visible from any airliner over the American plains. Invented by farmer Frank Zybach in the 1940s, the center pivot turned the dry High Plains into irrigated cropland, drawing down the Ogallala aquifer beneath them.
