Born into slavery in Missouri, Carver became the most famous Black scientist of his era at Tuskegee Institute, teaching Southern farmers ruined by cotton monoculture to rotate with peanuts, sweet potatoes and cowpeas that restored their soil, and inventing scores of uses for those crops so the rotation would pay. His bulletins and mobile school carried agronomy to sharecroppers no university would teach.
