The chemist who pulled fertilizer out of the air. Haber's 1909 synthesis of ammonia from atmospheric nitrogen, industrialized by Carl Bosch, broke agriculture's oldest constraint and now feeds roughly half of humanity. The same man directed Germany's chemical weapons program in the First World War, a duality every honest account of him carries; he received the 1918 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
