The science of grazing land: how much a pasture can support before it stops recovering, and how to read forage, soil and water together rather than livestock numbers alone. It emerged as a distinct discipline in the twentieth-century United States, pushed forward by the same overgrazing and Dust Bowl-era crises that built soil science, and its founding concern is still the one Garrett Hardin's 1968 essay put starkly: what happens to shared grazing land once no one bears the cost of overusing it.
