The claim that people should control their own food systems: how food is produced, who produces it, and where it goes. Coined in 1996 by the international farmers' movement La Via Campesina, it is a deliberate sharpening of food security, which asks only whether everyone has enough to eat and says nothing about where the food comes from or on whose terms. The two ideas share a goal and argue about the road, which is why this atlas carries both.
